This book had me question it all

Enlightening, this book opened my eyes and helped me to face some challenging thought processes。 It is well worth the read, I read it twice。

This was an excellent read。 It offered many ideas of insight。 There were some areas that was hard to follow or were contrary to my beliefs but I kept reading。 I kept an open mind and I am glad that I did。 I would recommend this book to my female clients who have lost their way。。。

I like all the other Shefali’s books but this one is really difficult to me because of how she sees the differences on men and women。 The worst, I thought, is that she doesn’t lead the reader to some new concept of how differently could masculinity manifest these days。 And the various ways feminility also can manifest differently。 The simple fact that men are predators and women like to eat cake (she never saw my husband’s face while eating a really good cake!) lays there… and it’s still lying t I like all the other Shefali’s books but this one is really difficult to me because of how she sees the differences on men and women。 The worst, I thought, is that she doesn’t lead the reader to some new concept of how differently could masculinity manifest these days。 And the various ways feminility also can manifest differently。 The simple fact that men are predators and women like to eat cake (she never saw my husband’s face while eating a really good cake!) lays there… and it’s still lying there on those lines in her book… It’s really frustrating。 。。。more

There's a lot of interesting information in here, and the author does try to remain neutral in presenting alternatives (although she obviously advocates for polyamory in a general sense)。 Some of it, especially toward the end chapters/last third of the book got pretty repetitive。 I'm going to reserve more judgement until after book club, to see how this book hit home with others。 For myself it was kind of 'meh。' There's a lot of interesting information in here, and the author does try to remain neutral in presenting alternatives (although she obviously advocates for polyamory in a general sense)。 Some of it, especially toward the end chapters/last third of the book got pretty repetitive。 I'm going to reserve more judgement until after book club, to see how this book hit home with others。 For myself it was kind of 'meh。' 。。。more

Overall I thought the majority of the concepts she brings up related to how our upbringings and societal expectations shape our perception of our being and “purpose” and how we can delineate from those to discover our true selves were fantastic。 I also enjoyed the emphasis on community and the relationships built through community, as this is something that is very much lacked by many of these new age self help gurus’ advice。 Tons of 5 star content and concepts that aligned with even what my own Overall I thought the majority of the concepts she brings up related to how our upbringings and societal expectations shape our perception of our being and “purpose” and how we can delineate from those to discover our true selves were fantastic。 I also enjoyed the emphasis on community and the relationships built through community, as this is something that is very much lacked by many of these new age self help gurus’ advice。 Tons of 5 star content and concepts that aligned with even what my own psychotherapist has taught me that have changed my life for the better overtime。The thing keeping this from being 5 stars for me is that I felt that there was quite a bit of intersectionality missing in several sections with respects to the man and woman roles and heterosexual relationships。 While she briefly acknowledges this, it still makes it somewhat hard to dissect and relate to some of the more black and white men/woman concepts as a member of the LGBTQ community with many friends who do not follow many of the stereotypical masculine and feminine man/woman behaviors and attributes she describes。 I personally feel like there are a lot of nuances she’s missing here, but I do understand the biological differences she speaks to。 Also while I understand that this was written speaking directly to woman, I think adding more of this nuance would have also allowed more of an opportunity for men picking up this book to also take accountability for some of the harmful ways in which they are responsible for or contributing to toxic masculinity and even toxic femininity。 。。。more

I barely could get though the first 100 pages because the direction of the book is confusing。 I totally disagree with the way the author pictures men, it seems she only shares her personal experience without any useful tips for other women who are looking for clarity。 I believe she was trying to write a book to help everyone and in the end it didn't help anyone。。I will try to finish it in the future, maybe it wasn't the right time for me。。。 I barely could get though the first 100 pages because the direction of the book is confusing。 I totally disagree with the way the author pictures men, it seems she only shares her personal experience without any useful tips for other women who are looking for clarity。 I believe she was trying to write a book to help everyone and in the end it didn't help anyone。。I will try to finish it in the future, maybe it wasn't the right time for me。。。 。。。more

I both resonated with and hated this book in different parts。 But whether resonating or hating, this book made me squirm in almost all of its parts。 And, maybe that makes it a good book。 But I'm only giving it one star。 I both resonated with and hated this book in different parts。 But whether resonating or hating, this book made me squirm in almost all of its parts。 And, maybe that makes it a good book。 But I'm only giving it one star。 。。。more

The book is written eloquently。 Some information in the book is good。 Some, in my opinion, wasn't。I don't think I can recommend this book as a self-help book to any new person。 By new, I mean someone who doesn't has enough knowledge about subjects on personal growth and development。I can't say that I found this book incredible or life-changing。It was okay。 The book is written eloquently。 Some information in the book is good。 Some, in my opinion, wasn't。I don't think I can recommend this book as a self-help book to any new person。 By new, I mean someone who doesn't has enough knowledge about subjects on personal growth and development。I can't say that I found this book incredible or life-changing。It was okay。 。。。more

So, I read this to preview it for a family member, thinking that the cultural congruence with the author and its endorsement by Oprah would make it more palatable to her。 In some ways, it did seem like it would be relatable to her, one who grew up in South Asia and had an arranged marriage and lived in extended families, especially, the author's descriptions of various archetypes, such as an "aunty" who was so anxious she could never be still and was always working, or the idea that one had to d So, I read this to preview it for a family member, thinking that the cultural congruence with the author and its endorsement by Oprah would make it more palatable to her。 In some ways, it did seem like it would be relatable to her, one who grew up in South Asia and had an arranged marriage and lived in extended families, especially, the author's descriptions of various archetypes, such as an "aunty" who was so anxious she could never be still and was always working, or the idea that one had to do good to earn ones place in a family。 Even I found two old ideas described in a novel way -- the idea of the ego as an eggshell protecting a hatchling, and the idea of "toxic femininity。 I found other concepts interesting, like the frank acknowledgment of male surveillance and predation of women and girls, and how helpful it would be for us to state this and share support and strategies with our girls early, and to let them know that we stand to protect them。 This is not a thing that each girl must learn on her own, only to lose the battle the first few rounds。 She does a good job explaining how to notice when one is triggered to see where to heal。 But she dismisses where the listener/reader may disagree as merely being triggered。 There was some of what she said that felt ill thought out。 While I may agree with her that our social constructs and many contingencies are choices made by culture, the author relies far too much on (defunct) theories of evolutionary biology that feels too stereotypical of men and women to describe (heterosexual) gender norms。 。。。more

Got through 80% of this and could take no more。 PREACHY and very hyper oriented towards oppressed women which is fine but doesn't resonate for me。 Got through 80% of this and could take no more。 PREACHY and very hyper oriented towards oppressed women which is fine but doesn't resonate for me。 。。。more

She started with nurture mattering, then tells us that nature matters more。 The she gets into power and essence and I stopped paying as much attention。 It was background noise at the end。 I guess I prefer to be an unconscious person。 Thought provoking and interesting to hear psychology from another culture, but it is hard to know how absorbed she has become by American concepts。 I still think marriage can work, but it will always be work and it matters if you want to do the work。

The book provided some interesting perspectives on how to get to our inner essence and spiritual awakening by untethering ourselves from our past, our roles, our thoughts, our minds etc。 The author talks about her experience in spiritual awakening and how that showed up in her divorce, her relationships with her daughter, parents, friends, her work, her body and all aspects of her life。 I do appreciate how transformative the awakening was to her but I struggled to connect and understand how she The book provided some interesting perspectives on how to get to our inner essence and spiritual awakening by untethering ourselves from our past, our roles, our thoughts, our minds etc。 The author talks about her experience in spiritual awakening and how that showed up in her divorce, her relationships with her daughter, parents, friends, her work, her body and all aspects of her life。 I do appreciate how transformative the awakening was to her but I struggled to connect and understand how she did it and how I can apply it to myself。 。。。more

I found myself hesitant to some ideas in the beginning, maybe Dr。 Shefalis very straightforward way of writing。 Kept on reading until the end and realized how enriching and enlighting this book turned out!

I had heard Dr。 Shefali in a podcast and also seen her in Mindvalley。 Her podcast with Jay Shetty was so powerful that I didn't doubt a single second and bought her book。 I wanted to hear more about her ideas and this book contributed very well to that。 A Radical Awakening is a book mostly for women。 Although there might be some men interested in reading it and understanding this perspective。 Still, I don't think this is a feminist book。 Far from that, Shefali provides helpful insights into mens I had heard Dr。 Shefali in a podcast and also seen her in Mindvalley。 Her podcast with Jay Shetty was so powerful that I didn't doubt a single second and bought her book。 I wanted to hear more about her ideas and this book contributed very well to that。 A Radical Awakening is a book mostly for women。 Although there might be some men interested in reading it and understanding this perspective。 Still, I don't think this is a feminist book。 Far from that, Shefali provides helpful insights into mens' psyche。 The book searches to liberate women from oppressing patriarchal cycles we've been subjected to since we were born。 As many psychologists will tell you, most women are still little girls when trying to find a relationship and lifestyle that will fill their needs and expectations of when they were little girls Sad, but true。 A Radical awakening is about accepting ourselves with the good and the bad things。 Being self-aware that everything changes and we are here on this life to only accept that。 We don't need to clinch to the conceptions, stories, and beliefs that our parents, our society, and our culture have taught us since we were kids。 We have to be free to choose our own awareness and realize that a true existence doesn't mean trying to fill wholes, or search for things that we don't have in others。 It only means being true to ourselves -not needing to be validated by anybody but ourselves。 Shefali provides good insights into the types of patterns that most women tend to fall into, and also how to start changing those patterns and stop using them because they don't serve us anymore。 Through examples with her patients, we come to see how common these situations are between women and how we usually live in denial about our reality and our power to change them。In general, I'm very happy with this book。 Although I must admit that even though I'm into this type of reading, the book was a bit dense and took me some time to finish it。 Not necessarily a bad thing but something that can deter some people。 I wish Shefali couple have either given more examples from her patients to keep the hook or had actually split the book。 There were too many teachings and too many things to absorb in one。 But aside from that, totally recommendable to all women in the world。 。。。more

This book came at the perfect timing in my life。 While majority of the concepts were known, they stroke a little different this time。 It is when we wake up, fully decided to accept us with all our parts, good, bad and ugly, start the self-love journey is when our life and everything around changes。 Dare greatly!

Didn’t love the men vs。 women pieces or the general intensity and abstraction in the writing and language。I did find the 10% about ego masks (the givers, takers, & controllers) to be helpful in understanding how different people rationalize harmful behaviors and continue looking for validation outside of themselves。 A book summary / spark-notes probably would have sufficed

An absolute drag which I actually did not finish。 Someone recommended this because they thought I could relate to the subjects she touched - I could not。 I had to stop halfway through the chapter on sexuality。 Maybe this is an eye opener for someone who's never been read a self-help book in his life, never heard of feminism or never questioned the system whatsoever。 I couldn't get past the "spiritual" language, every chapter is extremely repetitive and longer than it needs to be。 I could ramble An absolute drag which I actually did not finish。 Someone recommended this because they thought I could relate to the subjects she touched - I could not。 I had to stop halfway through the chapter on sexuality。 Maybe this is an eye opener for someone who's never been read a self-help book in his life, never heard of feminism or never questioned the system whatsoever。 I couldn't get past the "spiritual" language, every chapter is extremely repetitive and longer than it needs to be。 I could ramble on what I hated about this and I'm very confused what the person who recommended this thinks about me。 。。。more

I took a very long time to read this book as I kept starting and stopping。 At one point I started over。 Before I reached half way I was hearalding this book as a “must-read”。 However, While it is indeed a very transformative read in many respects, I cannot accept some of the radical “truths” that Dr Shefali posits without any seeming foundational basis other than her own authority。 One point that hit me as starkly illogical was the link made between belief in the creation story from Genesis and I took a very long time to read this book as I kept starting and stopping。 At one point I started over。 Before I reached half way I was hearalding this book as a “must-read”。 However, While it is indeed a very transformative read in many respects, I cannot accept some of the radical “truths” that Dr Shefali posits without any seeming foundational basis other than her own authority。 One point that hit me as starkly illogical was the link made between belief in the creation story from Genesis and the fact that, that belief has led to the current state of affairs re climate change。 For persons on a journey there are many useful and helpful tips, but as Dr Shefali herself notes, in relation to choosing a therapist, beware that some people are on their own journey, and mot everyone’s journey is yours 。。。more
